Objectives and Lecture Notes
Reading Assignment: Aron Chapter 2

1.  Describe how the mean gives a representation of the central tendency of a score distribution and compute a mean for a series of scores.

2.  Describe how the mode and median gives a representation of the central tendency of a score distribution and compute each for a series of scores.

3. Describe and compute variance and standard deviation from a distribution of scores.

4. Recognize the APA and text symbols used for mean, variance, and standard deviation.

5. Consider circumstances under which the mode or median might be more useful as measures of central tendency than the mean, as well as criticisms of overuse of the mean.

6. Interpret graphs and tables using means and standard deviations. (Flash on means in figures and tables; no video.)

Tutorials
